The Parthenon in Athens Essay Example For Students

The Parthenon in Athens Essay The Parthenon in Athens is perhaps one of the greatest architectural achievements by the Athenians. After being repeatedly demolished, the Parthenon stood as a â€Å"symbol of Greek independence, culture, and pride†(111 Thames Hudson). In 447 BC. Pericles promoted building the Parthenon on the remains of an earlier temple on the Acropolis. The proposal of the Parthenon pleased the Athenians because â€Å"it served as much as a celebration of Athens and her achievements as it did as a centre to worship the goddess Athena†(111 Thames Hudson). The new temple to Athena was â€Å"sacked by the Persians†(187 Abrams), so Kimon of Athens hired Callicrates to again begin rebuilding the temple to Athena. But, Pericles temporarily halted construction to commission another architect, Ictinos. So, together Callicrates and Ictinos â€Å"made many subtle adjustments in the lines of the structure and the placement of columns to refine the design and possibly to counteract the effects of various optical illusions that would otherwise seem to distort its (The Parthenon) appearance when it was viewed from a distance†(188 Abrams). After such struggles, it is not hard to imagine why the Parthenon was so important to the Athenians.

Business Environment Coursework Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

Business Environment - Coursework Example There are several types of economic systems but this paper will only concentrate on theses three namely, planned economy, participatory economy, and barter economy. In planned economy such as state socialism where the economy behaves like a hands on economy in which people follow the state laws of economy. In participatory economy, people guide the production and distribution of goods through participating in the system. While in barter trade, traders exchange goods for other goods directly. These three economic systems attempt to allocate resources effectively by helping in making decisions regarding how, what, and for whom to produce (Gitman and McDaniel, 2008:101). For instance, in planned economic system, the state owns the scarce resources whereby it allocates them to the public by setting up production targets and rate of growth according to how it views the public’s wants. In this system, the overall income and distribution of wealth falls in the hands of the state auth orities. As such, the amount of resources an individual can access depends on his income and the resource depends on the value of market. Barter economic system entails of exchanging goods for other goods. In this case, these economic systems allocate resources effectively and accordingly depending on need and availability. Factors of production Factors of production contribute to scarcity of production in that, the more people produce, the more they are utilizing the available resources. Scarcity takes place following the inadequate availability of resources in spite of the fact that people require resources to produce. Factors of production include the natural resources such as land, water, air, and minerals among others. There is labor, which entails about the human effort used during production of goods whereby it involves marketing expertise and technical skills. There is also capital stock whereby these are human made goods or means of production in which people use them to produce other goods (Kurtz and Boone, 2009:52). With this sense, factors of production such as land contribute towards scarcity of resources since it is a natural resource and humans cannot control that by structuring another land upon using the first one. It is available, but has no alteration or effort on the part of humans. Out of the three econo mic systems listed above, I think the most appropriate one is the planned system of economy. This is because, planned system of economy bases on the process of accumulating capital. Simultaneously, it also seeks to direct or control the process of accumulating capital via corporative ownership or state ownership. By so doing, this economic system ensures stability and encourages equality among different people as well as expanding the power of decision-making (Kurtz and Boone, 2009:69). In addition, with planned system of an economy, the public, the state, and corporative all carry out production with view of attaining maximum profits. In this system, the market players are responsible for making decisions concerning investment and as such, they are able to assess which means of production are competent in the market. As a result, this system of economy is appropriate since it coordinates production directly to satisfy the economic

Short Answers - Assignment Example Between kazuo’s camera andKurosawa’s intuitive directions, there is hardly any words needed to be used. The inconsistency is evident from this point where the camera accounts for the gesture, passes a forest’s breeze rush. The truth showed twenty four frames for each second, a bit different every time. Outstanding in the stellar cast is Toshiro’s bug-bitten outlaw, his antics surprise and even confuse into depths. Inconsistency is a cyclic technique employed in films to inspire the audience and make it interesting. A film may have a flow but at some point it makes a new turn and then it takes the pattern. The pattern is crucial in movies for capturing the audience and breaking boredom. Question two From time immemorial, film buffs, film critics and filmmakers will refer to a film period by the name the French new wave. To other people the term is to be thrown out to sound impressive. For some other people it carries significance and inspiration that represents a defining moment in cinematic innovation and individuality. It is very vital to note that while cahiers critics talked about their views, there was variation and diversity within the groups. This ranged from cinematic aesthetic to age. It was by diversifying their thoughts that they were able to challenge their views and engage in debates. The French new wave from their debates and diversification made films that shared variety aspects of filming in Europe making it unique. The French new wave created films in various genres deviating from the usual narrative conventions. The use of held cameras, natural lighting, real locations and improvised scripts formulated a feeling of realism. These techniques were different from the ones other movements employed. One of the directors’ aims was to have the audience know that they are watching a film. This was done through the medium employed. The directors had a character talk to the audience face to face hence having a break on the fourth wall. At that time it was a unique, surprising and new technique which today is employed in present cinemas. This movement also employed a film that maximized memory as a subject, showing a changing mentality that is modern in the history of film making. The technique the movement used was unusual as it influence other movements as they adopted it. Question three Third Cinema is known to be credited to two filmmakers, Octavio Getino and Fernando Solanas. Following a film completion in 1968, the two drafted a manifesto. The manifesto had a laid down structure on the classification of cinemas: the first cinema, second cinema and the third cinema. First cinema is a Hollywood production model. It also applies to other cinema production of in other countries that is done in large scale like Bollywood. A very vital factor for the two, the production mode represents an ideology that there exists a specific relationship between the spectator and film where cinema is taken as a spectacle (Chanan, pp.375). With close reference to Before you were mine Mother..any distance and On my first Sonne explain how imagery, structure and language are used to convey these relationships. Relationships between Parents and Children are described in several poems in the Anthology. With close reference to 'Before you were mine' 'Mother..any distance' and 'On my first Sonne' explain how imagery, structure and language are used to convey these relationships. The three poems all contain different ideas on relationships between parents and children. In before you were mine, the author writes about how someone imagines their mother, and her life, before they were born. Mother..any distance tells of a son's changing relationship with his mother, and what has happened as he has grown older. On my first Sonne is elegiac, ittells a fathers story of his son's death, and the emotions which he has felt. The two poems, Before you were mine and Mother..any distance use imagery; On my first Sonne does not. Carol Ann Duffy uses imagery freely in Before you were mine describing the mother, 'The three of you bend from the waist, hoolding each other, or your knees, and shriek at the pavement.' The author gives a different image in each stanza, each containing her mother, as well as others, different in each paragraph. In the first stanza she includes her mother, her mother's friends, and boyfriends. In the second she goes on to describe the mothers red shoes, how they are now relics to her child. In the last stanza it is explained how, even when she was a child, she wanted her mother to be a friend, 'Even then I wanted the bold girl winking in Portobello, somewhere in Scotland, before I was born.' The poemMother..any distance uses i... ...lking to him son, it seems as though he assumes that the boy can read his words. He calls his son the child of his 'right hand' these ideas suggest the boy is of great worth and also that he would have been as his father, the writer's heir. An image which comes from the Bible. It reflects ancient cultures, how Jesus is shown as sitting at God's right hand. Before you were mine describes, in each stanza a little more of the image of the mother, each stanza is different, and this is effective, as each has it's own little story, and image. The author also reminds you in each paragraph, that the mothers child is not yet born, and it is only their imagination. The poem flows well, and she uses the title as the last phrase of the poem, 'Where you sparlkle and waltz and laugh before you were mine' - this is a very effective ending, and completes the poem well.

Example of school report for facilities Essay

I am writing regarding an article published in your magazine last week entitiled †¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦ I strongly disagree with the writer for a number of reasons. see more:importance of school facilities Firstly, as Socrates wrote, work makes the man. However, in Plato’s Dialectics he argued that, on the contrary, one must have sufficient rest to Secondly, I believe that we need to ‘recharge our batteries’ in order to have the energy to work efficiently. For example, as an IB student I have so much work to do with CAS, ToK, Extended Essays and all the other portfolios, fieldwork, internal assessments, oral exams that I cannot devote enough attention to one alone. Instead, with exams today I am left tired and unmotivated. If I do not have time to relax and unwind, I cannot possibly do the work properly. Therefore leisure is necessary for doing a good job in whatever field. Lastly, In conclusion, Yours Faithfully, Zorg Last Friday I went to the swimming pool the school said it owned before I moved here to see what it was like. Well, guys, here’s my report: Size- The size is its biggest asset. It is an Olympic-Sized pool which will allow all you fat, physically challenged pre-IB kids to get in shape for 2008. In fact, it also is designed to accommodate disabled children like you Vincent. Even during the weekend it’s open with enough room for you to play with your parents, grandparents, and all the uncles currently staying with you. Price The pool is expensive (if you buy tickets from the school) but there is a discount card for students which gives 15% to orphan children suffering from Bird Flu. Location- Perfectly sited near an industrial dump. Is a problem because it was nuclear industry before the swimming pool located there, so radiation sometimes forces the pool to close on smoggy days. The road is new- it’s being built right now. Facilities- There is a change room in 21st Century Hotel which is a problem in winter. The showers work but the water is greenish and cold. Finally, there is no chlorine in the water so it smells and has algae on the surface. The sauna is equipped with coal but there is no ventilation so get a tan but die of suffocation. Happy Hour- With new management, the owners have now added a bar to the pool allowing you to be totally relaxed swimming in the deep end or jumping off the diving board. Free drinks every time you jump! Doctors- After this new facility, trained medical staff are on standby with dogs trained to swim and rescue disabled children. I highly recommend this pool because it is the only one in Chaoyang apart from the pond behind Annie’s restaurant (during the rainy season).
